O Pão

Ouço palmas no portão.

The Bread

I hear someone clapping at the gate. The dogs bark, but not enough to halt the claps. I stare out the window and see a boy who makes a gesture telling me to listen to him more closely. He wants me to be moved by his story and in return I should give him a few coins. I tell him that I don´t have change but have some bread. He seems pleased with the offer. I take the dogs and bring a French bread for him, certain that I am doing a good deed. I don´t see when he leaves, but when I return to the gate I see that the bread is left on the top of the wall in a gesture of contempt. The dogs eat the bread and come to say thanks.
